Gather ‘Round, Kids: It’s “Reading & Writing” by Thirsty Curses

There’s nothing better than mixing childlike themes with rock n’ roll. “How else are you gonna prepare for the worst?” We certainly can’t argue with that logic.

Thirsty Curses new single, “Reading & Writing”, is quite literally made for that typical, colorful small classroom for the same purpose. Despite having a vibrant piano, and overall vibe in general, this track doesn’t shy away from reality.

Starting and ending with isolated piano and vocals, it introduces the rest of the band midway, and with it, its rock elements, bridging the gap of nursery rhyme-esque and rock n’ roll to about fifty-fifty.

Reading into the meaning, it speaks about preparing oneself for what the world has to offer, preferably as soon as possible, hence the (almost) child-friendly tune of it all. One should learn how to be independent, to stand on their own two feet. The practice happens gradually, and as stated, “How else are you ever gonna learn?”

It’s a fun, witty song with serious undertones. The visuals, the single art, is also a great touch given Thirsty Curses’ artist background of having usually dark-paletted covers. It’s a great pick for a quick listen, as well as an introduction to the band itself.
