Debt Collector by Mad Painter: A Track Review

There’s something hard to exactly pin down with this new track from Mad Painter. While their influences from iconic bands like Nazareth, Alice Cooper, and most especially Deep Purple come through, there’s also the oddball energy of their newest single, Debt Collector, that reminds me of the grittier and more free-flowing tracks of Creedence Clearwater Revival as this 5-minute blues-rock barnburner chugs along with a tasteful blend of vintage sounds and melodies that certainly get the blood flowing.

Harsh fuzz and chipper yet soulful vocal tones compliment this track and the result is one of the more intriguing listens in the contemporary music scene, especially for a Boston music project whose affinity for this genre could stand firm as if you know where to look, blues is making a slow and steady comeback.

And when more tracks like this come through, especially if this is just a precursor to more interesting textures as lyrically, with lines like “But I got to tell you honey / when it comes to your money / ain’t no way – I’m gonna let you live with outstanding tax” and “I will never talk of freedom / from the spell that cost so much / have some rules for you so read ’em / better look before you touch”, this song adds up, much like a debt collector would, to a darn good time worth a toe-tap or a few.
