Capturing the Workplace Blues: Leaving by Alex Rose & Fiona Casey

In all my years of reviewing and critiquing tracks, I feel like I’ve already heard all the possible topics known to man. But guess what? This is the first time I’ve heard a track that has a simple, straightforward topic about the workplace. Like, workplace, workplace.

Alex Rose and Fiona Casey collaborated on the song “Leaving,” which talks about the everyday cries of the modern worker. Join me as I break down the track and explain what makes “Leaving” interesting.

The intro of this track uses major chords, portraying a happy and exciting sound, but the lyrics say otherwise. The song discusses working-class citizens and their cries about leaving work permanently. It has a catchy chorus, driven by a playful melody and wordplay associated with the tears of the modern dreamer.

The second verse discusses the typical employee’s journey, from being excited on the first day to realizing their true worth and place in the marketplace. Alex Rose’s rap part is clear and understandable, and that’s his greatest feat: his lyrical clarity and flow.

Overall, “Leaving” is a track that struck a chord with me. It was relatable because I had the same experience of being stressed out and understanding that I’m just a number in a company. In terms of musical technicality, if not for the happy and exciting chord progression, the whole premise of the track would be cringy.

The idea of doubling down on both lyrics and sound only works for certain topics and themes, like heartache and loss, just to name a few. The contrast between the sound and the lyrics is a great Juxtaposition in the grand scheme of things.
