Marion Talavera, a young Filipino singer-songwriter is back with his latest single, “alfonso”. This time, you will hear a different Talavera as this song is quite different from the sound that he usually releases.
Known for his signature calming vocals and modern pop love songs, Talavera’s music often revolves around the themes of love: happiness, excitement, loss, longing, confusion, and other things that people go through when they experience love bugs. The unique style of storytelling on his music usually captures the listener’s interest, thus his fame with his almost 22,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
“alfonso,” is something that a lot of OPM fans would surely enjoy. It is packed with Talavera’s signature calming vocals and musicality, but this time has pop-punk references. This song tackles the grim story of alfonso. How he is lost, and the protagonist seemed to be looking for him and seeking some accountability for whatever sh*t he has done. The line, “alfonso, alfonso, igalaw mo ang baso,” highlights all this.
This latest single proves that there is more to what Talavera is as an artist. He can offer more with his skills and vocal prowess. He is established in his style as he blends well with the traditional OPM and the modern sounds of pop to create his unique musicality. But with “alfonso” he has shown that he is not boxed within the usual genre that people expect him to have.
Talavera is the kind of artist that I’d personally call a “hidden gem” waiting to be discovered. I first stumbled upon him way back in 2020 while looking for a company (through music) for my long nights on duty. “Stranger Now” is a big hit, and there’s no denying as it currently has almost three million streams on Spotify. That track became one of my comfort songs, maybe (definitely!) because the song is something that I can relate to on a personal level. *squints*
