“Weekend Demos” by The Tonio Method: An EP Review

There is a fine line that dictates the success of a band or musicians when it comes to their influences in music. One is that it can be a riff-off of what’s currently on trend and lacks substance and originality whatsoever, while the other type is authentic, inspired, and unique. “Weekend Demos,” a recently released EP by Antonio Sibal (Quezon City, Philippines), through the project The Tonio Method, presents just that type of authenticity. Armed with his guitar and self-taught knowledge of Logic Pro to record, this EP started as a couple of songs recorded on separate weekends, the artist shares. With the simplicity presented in each song on this indie alt-rock project, there’s no denying that it will make its way right through your hearts.

The album opens with the track “Kay Gaan,” an acoustic track that’s easy to listen to and is packed with clever construction of lyrics and a nice structure of a song. Vocal-wise, this sure is impressive, as the lines were delivered clearly and expressively. I somehow thought this was a feel-good song on my first listen, but then I quickly realized that it carries a much deeper “hugot” that has something to do with a fading love and relationship. The whole premise is a very relatable, and emotionally packed track that is full of sincerity.

“Kailangan Niyong Makita” comes in next and carries the same somber and acoustic vibe from the initial track. This track, on the other hand, is about wanting to be seen or recognized for something that they have shared—a craft, music, artistic breakthrough, or something that the artist is proud of. This track carries that certain sadness and the silent protest that the artist feels while wanting to show off their creations, as often, people are tactless about their comments. This acknowledges the idea that above all those comments, the most important thing is always you—your feelings and your value!

The revamped version of the initially released track “Ningning” under another monitor, Tonio95, is also a part of this EP. It is honestly a standout track because of its reach instrumentation that showcases the growth of this artist. While this track carries darker and more depressing content on its first release, the revamped version carries a certain understanding, acceptance, and resignation. It is a song about the uncertainties in life in general and how it’s not always about glitz and glamour. In reality, it fades; it dulls.

On the other hand, “Palagi Kang Ganyan” carries a throwback OPM alternative rock sound that was famous way back in the 90’s to 2000s. The initial notes of this track also reminded me of Avril Lavigne’s classic track Sk8terboi. This song closes the whole EP with its themes about unrequited love; the chaotic and hard-pounding instruments reflect that burst of feelings and sparks you feel whenever you see the person that you like, even though it’s unfortunate it did not end on a happier ending.

With the current space muddled by overproduced music, The Tonio Method offers authentic and easy-to-listen tracks through the EP “Weekend Demos.” This EP has great potential; it is packed with emotions, and the vibe is just great. It also reflects realities that listeners face, so it’s easier to connect with all the tracks. Listen to Weekend Demos.
