Your New Club Playlist Just Dropped: Could Have Been by The New Citizen Kane (EP Review)

Saying “the only thing lingering is the nostalgia of 2005” would be right but also an understatement, because this seven-track EP is exactly what the earlier years of this century sounds like. Set to drop this December 6th, 2024, this EP makes me feel like I’m transported back to the period of tight jeans and iPods. However, that sense of nostalgia remains only to be familiar, as there are also foreign elements integrated in these songs.

With five original tracks and two remixes (which absolutely brought the ultimate club vibes to the function, by the way), there’s no judgement if this would be chosen to rewind in the club all night. The immaculate vibe and synth alone is bound to blend seamlessly within the dancefloor, or alternatively, you could just put it on blast with friends; that’s how flexible The New Citizen Kane made this to be.

“Forget The World” and “Maybe Tonight” both embody such intricate melodies and a beat that just hits (kudos to the production)! The image of entering a club or a bar and having a blast comes to mind, and the hopes of this EP blowing up and catching the public’s attention grows even more.

There’s nothing more ear-catching than the title track, “Could Have Been (Single Mix)”. It’s everything a first track should be that would make listeners stay and listen to the rest of it. The typing effect that you can hear throughout the song is a nice touch. And, since it’s got nostalgia laced into it, it appeals to a certain audience, as well as today’s generation because of the words and meaning of it all aligning to their experiences and feelings.

The same sentiment goes for “Chasing the Past (ReWork ‘24)”, with lyrics such as “I won’t push my life away / you say you’ll stay / your heart’s so far away” and just has that yearning and a theme that really grabs people’s attention. Plus, the sense of a build-up, the semi-turn up more than halfway through, as well as the consistency and catchiness of the beat makes this a complex and great track.

If there’s anything more about this EP that will make it worthy to grace your ears, it’s their Coldplay cover. Yes, the third track up is “Talk”, and it’s completely different (of course it is – it’s a cover for a reason), almost unrecognizable in a good way. They’ve quite literally made that song their own by integrating their style to Coldplay’s song, matching the entire ambience.

One word to describe this EP would probably be impressive. The energy just gets you; it’s contagious. The New Citizen Kane definitely has the creativity to make something incredible, and it’s available to tune into now.
