Unpredictable: The Tales of Morpheus by The New Citizen Kane Album Review

The New Citizen Kane had just released his newest LP, The Tales of Morpheus. Join me as I discuss this LP and read why The New Citizen Kane is unpredictable every step of the way.

The Album started with the track “Morpheus In The Club.” It’s an electronic pop track with infectious beats and in-your-face, over-the-top synth licks reminiscent of artists like Skrillex, Slander, and Deadmau5, to name a few. It has a few vocal samples on it which is the perfect intro for this album because it introduces us to the atmosphere and sound that we will be hearing throughout the Album.

I specifically like the intro synth lick of the track “Killer Charisma” because of its wavy rhythm. It sounds and feels unusual, but it gets the job done. The bass line and the drum pattern go hand in hand, making you move a little bit. “Killer Charisma” has this funky vibe to it that makes you want to dance, The lyrics and the flow don’t sound forced hence the reason why it’s a catchy and infectious tune. It’s an automatic mood changer, to be honest.

We are three tracks in and the bass line, synth line, and drum pattern for “Heartburn” goes even harder than the first two tracks. To be honest, with this level of funkiness, I’m not sure how The New Citizen Kane can top that.  The keyboard lead part in the middle part of the track is just magical. It’s not over the top, it doesn’t wow you but it’s in the middle. It’s a perfect balance between being insanely good and simple.

“Disco Love” feels and sounds disco and love because of its funky, happy-going tune without breaking the whole point of the overall album which is disco. The addition of the Saxophone lick in the intro gives off an easy Sunday morning feel to it.

If you need that, RnB/Soul fix, then “Stupid Blue” is what you need. The intro guitar lick sets off this oozzy feeling making this track undeniably good. “Electric Nights and Gotta Secret” took us back to that electronic pop feel of the album because of the beat, the overall feel of the track, and that phasing that makes you want to move.

The keyboard synth lick on the track, “Lump In Your Throat” is just rad because of its unpredictability. if you come and think of it, there are 21 tracks on this album and it’s amazing to hear that every track has its offering.

“North American Philosopher” is no exception. The production quality, the vocal sample, and the overall progression are not over the top but they get the job done. It makes you move and that’s what all that matters.  We are now introduced to a more mellow side of The New Citizen Kane by the track “Morpheus Interlude” and to be honest, adding this track balances out all of the funkiness and electronic offering on this LP which is for me, a good thing.

“Could Have Been” is part of that mellow side of the album which is again, a great addition to this 21-track LP. Giving listeners a different side of The New Citizen Kane which is more lyrical and more relaxed. The track, “Forget The World” has this rock meets electronic feel because of its progression and arrangement. Adding another “character” to a lengthy album like this is for me, an eye-opener for potential listeners and fans. It’s a great showcase of skills and creativity.

“Endless Summer (Ride The New Wave)” has this groovy and infectious bass line that carries the whole song. Adding on top of that is that simple and catchy chorus hook. For me, a chorus hook doesn’t have to be wordy or clever. it just needs to be easy and catchy. I am now convinced that, The New Citizen Kane has an unlimited supply of inspiration and passion because of the tracks, “Overdrawn and Meet Me On Street Corners.” to be honest, by this time, I have this gut feeling that The New Citizen Kane has exhausted all of his prowess because of the lines and licks that he has created in the previous tracks but he’s still at it. These tracks are still groovy as hell!

“Buy Me A Ticket” is another feel-good pop song because of its instrumentation and arrangement that is giving off this driving on a sunny day feel. This track has all the elements of a great mainstream song. If you feel like The New Citizen Kane has exhausted all of his powers in the first few tracks then you are wrong my friend. “Contra Botafogos” is a mellowed-down song that starts with an acoustic guitar riff. How cool is that!

“Was A Light” is an electronic meets mellow track set to mimic tracks from the early 2010s because it combines electronic beats and that keyboard lick that is not overpowering but is simply swaying in the mix. “Adonis and Aphrodite” is another pop electronic rock track because the guitar lick progression all thorough out the track carries the entirety of the track.

What made “Alchemy” different from the other tracks is that it has pop elements added to it using that plucking guitar lick and then the robotic vocal mix which is not supposed to work but sure enough, it does. And to end the LP, we have “Morpheus (Made Of Dreams)” which has this 80s feel because of the production value and the arrangement, and I honestly, If I had listened to this track randomly, I would’ve thought this was from the 80s.

Overall, The Tales of Morpheus LP is as good as it gets because of its rich genre vocabulary. You get to hear electronic, rock, pop, indie, soul, R&B, and lots more. My only take on this is that it’s 21 tracks long. If I were to produce it, I would make it a two —or three-part album to make it more digestible for listeners and new fans alike.
