Tunes of Teenage Romance: Kuya Clint’s ‘Highschool Sweethearts’

Fan of Rex Orange County, Grentperez, and Joji vibe? Well, we might just have a local artist with a similar vibe for you. Meet Kuya Clint, an alternative R&B artist hailing from Cavite, Philippines. Clint recently dropped his highly anticipated 10-track album, “Highschool Sweethearts,” on February 29, 2024.

Inspired by his ongoing long-distance relationship with his girlfriend of 5 years, Clint’s album talks about the beauty and struggles they’ve encountered since their high school days in 2017. The title, Highschool Sweethearts, perfectly summarizes their journey together, showing Clint’s desire to share their love and experiences through his music.

Drawing from influences like Grentperez, Rex Orange County, Joji, Drake, Manila Grey, Just Hush, Rico Blanco, and Kitchie Nadal, Clint’s album blends alternative R&B with elements of rock, jazz, and hip-hop, offering a diverse musical experience.

The album starts off with the Lofi/R&B vibes of “Prom Night” – doesn’t it just scream high school? It’s a perfect fit for the album theme. This track is a nostalgic trip down memory lane, taking you back to those sweet high school romance days. And let’s not forget the excitement of prom night, right? “Prom Night” offers a glimpse into Clint’s own high school love story with his longtime girlfriend. Next up is the title track of the album, “Highschool Sweetheart.” It’s got that perfect R&B beat that meshes seamlessly with the vocals and lyrics, all tying back to the album’s theme. You can just imagine how proud Clint’s girlfriend must be of him. I mean, writing an entire album inspired by your relationship? Now that’s what I call a romantic gesture. It’s a beautiful expression of love that truly speaks volumes.

Moving on to one of my personal favorites from the album, “Over.” It’s got this fantastic Lofi vibe that just makes you want to nod along slowly. And let’s take a moment to appreciate the production quality of every track on this album. It’s top-notch—well-mixed, masterfully mastered, and professionally recorded. “Nothing to Do” stands out with its acoustic charm and soothing melody, making it the perfect serenade for a loved one. Similarly, “Everything” charms with its acoustic guitar-driven sound, offering a serene listening experience.

But wait, we’re not about to give away the whole album just yet! There’s a lot more where that came from. Tracks like “Decay, “Puppy Love,” “Seeing Red, and “Streets” are waiting in the wings, ready to earn their rightful place on your chill vibe playlist.
