The Wichitas by The Wichitas (EP Review)

Starts with a bang, ends with a bang. The Wichitas’ self-titled EP is a literal burst of energy from start to finish that anyone can’t get enough of.

You could almost feel the emotion through the gritty, powerful riffs, accompanied with honest melodies and beats that are just as powerful. With the intricate rhythm in all five songs, the band has surely made it their mission to make their mark in the scene, and they have done it terrifically.

It starts with “Wide Open World”, which immediately greets you with rage-like tones and straight to the point lyrics. Straight away, you just know The Wichitas does not mess around, making you stop and listen to their tunes (and probably wear black in the process). With “Head In The Clouds”, providing us with the same honesty and grittiness, maybe a hint of quirkiness or playfulness with lyrics such as “you’re looking honky dory baby, give me a smile”.

Their energy doesn’t falter at all in the following songs, “Sunken Ship”, bringing a unique catchiness to the entire extended play, and “Peacekeeper” with its groovy riff that will keep you on your toes. To an extent, there’s a hint of possessiveness in the band’s songwriting, the hint of every song being able to fit a specific scenario or message perfectly. And they don’t sugarcoat; if they want to let someone know something, you best believe they will speak their mind through these songs.

Overall, The Wichitas have great potential given their profound sound and vocals. As per their page, they are apparently inspired by bands such as The Black Keys and The Datsuns. In other words, they are a rock band that you need to listen to. This EP only consists of a few songs that will leave you hanging and wanting more.
