Thanks for the Clarity by Shadow of Phage

Thanks for the Clarity is a true rocker. The music is great, and reminds me a lot of Paramore. But do you know what I like most about this track? The lyrics. For a lot of women, and especially young women, dealing with all the woes of maturing, this track will be an anthem. It’s inspiring. It’s got a message of being independent and self-reliant, which I think is important in the modern era.

A lot of pop music sensualizes women and love. But we live in times that require a lot of flexibility in thought, prioritization, and in determining what kinds of traditional values are still relevant, versus what is practically advantageous.

It’s this kind of free-thinking ethic that’s always attracted me to punk rock. Of internal strength in the face of external, repressive forces. And I think a lot of rock music captures this spirit well. But I’ve rarely come across a song that communicated the message so clearly with lyrics. With a commercial sound too.

It’s interesting to think that this is the kind of message that’s made its way from counterculture to mainstream. And for that, Shadow of Phage is noteworthy. Can’t wait for the full LP to drop.
