Tessellate by Darren Deschaine: An EP Review

Music can still tell stories even without words, and Darren Deschaine‘s newest EP, “Tessellate,” proves just that. Normally, lyrics dictate the major vibe for the track that you listen to, but with “Tessellate,” it is packed with your top-notch metal sound loaded with thundering guitar riffs of instrumentals that hit really hard from start to finish—a great collection that will hook you right off bat.

The track opens with the track “Equinox,” a track packed with intense and thundering riffs from Deschaine’s eight-string guitar that rumble through your chest as you go along throughout the whole track. With the blend of synths and layered electronic effects on the whole track, it gives off the vibe of a gathering storm that is about to hit. As it intensifies, the sound expands as the song progresses. This track carries the banner for this whole collection, a rightful start to set up a great stage for the EP.

Then comes “Flesh Puppet,” which carries the whole EP into a sci-fi realm with a sound that belongs to a cyberpunk action-packed noir film as punctuated by a layer of futuristic synths throughout the track. This also goes with the track “Sabbath.” The instrument carries this guttural intensity that creates this electrifying atmosphere for the piece—it is a chaotic dance of a man and his instrument. This track is heavy with depth—an absolute banger!

Next comes the monster of a title track, “Tessellate,” with its tight riffs that carry an intense build-up. Deschaine channels his inner chaos through the complex instrumentation of the track combined with the artistry from Tosin Abasi and the aggressive edgy sound of Mick Gordon of DOOM. On the other hand, “Sever.exe” comes in with a chill, almost serene vibe that changes the pace for the whole EP. Just the calm before the storm where dark clouds silently form before the hard downpour, this track creeps in with the brooding and guttural bass played through the guitar of Deschaine, and as it shifts gear into its intensified course, the guitar riffs will hit you head on like a sledgehammer of sound, making it more satisfying. What a brilliant way to structure a piece!

“Brain of Theseus” one of my favorite track along with Tessellate, has an explosive and cinematic type of vibe that is battle-ready and intensified. This track can fit as an official soundtrack for an epic showdown of two powerful warriors, as each note it carries drips with potent intensity. It perfectly encapsulates the aggression and the thirst to be on top through the relentless riffs of the track. It is a thrilling piece—an absolute favorite that surely leaves its mark on the listeners.

“Tessellate” proves that in music, you can still evoke strong emotions and tell stories even without the use of words. This EP is an epic showcase of skills for Darren Deschaine and the power that he holds because of his mastery of the eight-string guitar. Technicality-wise, production-wise, and musicality-wise, there is no question that Darren Deschaine can be classified as top in his field. So, volumes up and rock on!
