Sweet and Spicy Is She: A Review of Anayka She’s EP She

This one’s mostly for the girlies: rise up, because this EP might be your next hot girl anthem! We shouldn’t be hot girls only for the summer, let it be all year round. Whether you’re attending university, already have a job, need a quick pick-me-upper, or just generally an R&B enjoyer, this album is for you!

Hot girls not only acknowledge what their effects were on other people, but they also recognize and assess themselves, and navigate through their life and personality, because that’s how an icon should be! Being a hot and empowered girl (this also applies to whichever gender!) comes from within, and that’s what this EP is all about.

These empowering themes take center stage in the songs of Anayka She in her latest EP She, which was released last July 26, 2024. The Brooklyn-based singer and influencer poured her heart into creating this R&B EP in hopes of sharing how she tries to navigate her 20-something life. Through this collection of songs, she explores the complexities of life, love, mental health, and trust. This EP is a collection of tracks to remind you that it is okay to be confused about what to do and what to feel in a certain situation because, after all, we won’t know what’s best for us if we don’t risk taking the learning curve of things.

The sizzling-hot track Coming welcomes you as the EP’s first track. It’s hot, it’s sultry, Coming is that girl ― it is sweet and spicy at the same time. It is the perfect introduction to this EP, because she didn’t come to play. This track also sets the mood for the rest of the album, major Mother behavior.

As Coming fades into the background, it is immediately followed by the EP’s next track Touch ― a song that touches on the delicate and multifaceted themes of trust. Anayka wrote this song as if she getting to trust the guy in the song, would make or break her. Its lyrics also included themes of clinging and begging to not break her entirely ― it’s as if it was a plea.

Another hot song coming right up after Touch is Berry. I love how although its lyricism leans on romancing someone, my interpretation of it leans towards self-love rather than the aforementioned one. I love how she hypes herself up while telling the “guy” that I am the best choice in the league. It is just so empowering on its own.

Mr. Right Now explores the themes of love and settling for less because it satisfies the need that one has for the now. It is knowing your worth yet, letting be sucked into a situation you know you don’t deserve. It is something that all of us have gone through, and that’s the charm point of it. The EP also features other tracks like Mental Peace is a Luxury, Switch, and Ain’t No Way which also fall into the same thematic category as the ones mentioned above.

With this EP, Anayka She just cemented her name and legacy in the music industry. It takes a lot of guts for an IT girl to talk about vulnerable topics like this, especially in an industry that was dominated by the patriarchy. Watch out for her and her upcoming releases by following her on her social media and music streaming platform accounts!
