“San Diego” by The New Citizen Kane Is A Reflection Of The Past

Have you ever had something happen in a distinct place all at once, leaving you conflicted on what to think, and whether or not to cherish or move past it? In this song, memories and emotions are revisited, of what seems to be a string of joyous moments leading up to heartbreak.

The New Citizen Kane, or singer-songwriter Kane Michael Luke, has been putting out his art for a while now, from his debut EP in 2001 “Now or Never” to “It’s Not Science… It’s A Feeling” in 2014 and “Could Have Been”, released ten years later. “San Diego” in particular is the first single from his upcoming album “Psychedelika”, which is said to be expected towards the end of the year.

Accompanied by a cool, summer groove, this song momentarily wears a face of good vibes, not until the chorus: “I got lost, I fell in love, you broke my heart in San Diego”. He then goes on to claim that the city will forever have an array of mixed feelings on him, as it holds the happiest and saddest memories, or both ends of a closed book.

What’s striking is the songwriting, really; apart from descriptives and reminiscence, he expresses the magnitude of how much the experience means to him, through correlating how men feel in certain phenomena (i.e., the heat of the sun and the power of the moon) to the general feeling of love.

It is safe to say that not only is this song a summer hit (sound-wise), but it also goes through great lengths to explain complex feelings through a song, making it poetic in nature. “San Diego” has the potential to link various experiences from the one shared by the artist to similar ones from the listeners. It’s another great listen from The New Citizen Kane.
