Powering the Female Rage with PEGGY’s New EP entitled Dear Reader

Once upon a time, there was a girl who emerged from nothingness and decided to lead the women to their discovery of empowerment… Erase, erase! This isn’t your typical fairytale. But, with PEGGY’s new EP, the fairytale will be served on a platter in the form of a set of tracks. Not just one, not two, but six!

First, let us tell you a little backstory. PEGGY has been surrounded by music ever since she was a kid. Her mother handled backup vocal singers for a swing band, while her father had a passion for listening to vinyl records especially those with the likes of Nirvana and Metallica. She picked up the piano at five years old and landed multiple roles in local musical theater productions. Just like a real-life princess, ain’t she?

Let’s slide down the rabbit hole that is called Dear Reader! The first one off the EP is Feminine Rage. PEGGY used characters from literary pieces to support the main theme of the song, which is the title itself, feminine rage! She showed how these female characters were wronged in each of the literary pieces they belong in and how it was romanticized by the readers and the critics. Blended in an electrifying beat, you’ll surely suddenly want to oust that feminine rage inside you, too!

Second off the list of tracks is Alice. With an enticing intro, this song will surely become an earworm to those who choose to listen to this song. The lyricism of this song was based on Alice from Alice in Wonderland. She once told in an interview that Alice is about disassociation, perfectly portrayed just like how Alice in Wonderland greatly incorporated the elements in its story.

Mess is the third song from the EP. It started as a dreamy lullaby-ish piano instrumental. The line “I know I’m not incompetent, but damn you made me feel that way.” was delivered beautifully but it sure does pack a punch. Mess is definitely a girl’s anthem, a girl who’s already tired of delivering expectations from other people who don’t even want to try.

For the fourth track, Flight Risk was also dreamily delivered by PEGGY. Behind its very dreamy beat and melody are lyrics that talk about commitment issues and having a problem building a relationship with people around you. If you’re a girl, it might’ve been like that sometimes.

30 Second Love Story is a song that most girls can relate to. Imagine being in an “I don’t need a man to live” phase, yet it just made you feel too giddy to fall in love with strangers you’ll never see again, which might be an airport love-at-first-sight, a coffee run crush, or a library love story. It’s just fun falling in love with people without waiting for something in return, and it’s a surprise it’s a global experience.

The epilogue of the EP is the sixth song, Dear Reader. It’s a Peter Pan-themed song wherein PEGGY used Wendy and Peter Pan as metaphors for coming back and seeing each other again. A small plea, a promise waiting to be heard, a closing of a chapter, yet still reminding you to come back and meet me again soon.

PEGGY wrote fairytales for us through these songs, but she wanted us to fill in the blanks, to interpret it with our own understanding, and letting us make the magic instead of receiving it from her.
