PINK TRASH PROJECT’S “AKO’Y NAG-ALANGAN”: AN ODE TO THE UNREQUITED

Pink Trash Project Special Feature Part 2 of 3

We are fortunate enough to be included in Pink Trash Project’s list of listeners who heard her re-envisioned and rerecorded song Ako’y Nag-alangan in advance before its release. Ako’y Nag-alangan was first released three years ago in 2021, written and composed by Pink of Pink Trash Project. With its new version, musicians like Leo Macaraig, Brendan Grey, Von Acosta, and Vasyl Javier helped Pink Trash Project arrange this track. Sam Marquez of the band One Click Straight also helped mix this song, making it Pink’s favorite among her tracks.

The trope surrounding Ako’y Nag-alangan is that of a person being able to give everything they can to that one person they love, but never receiving the same treatment. The lyricism in this song hits right in the feels because perhaps, most of us have gone through the same situation that the meaning of the song bears. Mixed with Pink Trash Project’s signature vocals, the song intends to comfort and slap you with the cold, hard, truth at the same time. Think of it as a motherly tough type of love.

With its piano instrumental as an intro and an overall improved instrumental mix, Ako’y Nag-alangan offers you company when you’re already certain that the love you are giving will never be reciprocated. That no matter how grand your effort is, that person will never ever look your way. So instead of pursuing that person all the way through, you’ll plant seeds of doubt in your mind, in that case, “mag-alangan” if it’s even worth risking your sanity for. We, as humans, naturally fall in love deeply. This is human nature, to say the least. Although this might be true, we still need to put ourselves over anyone, as always. And this is what Ako’y Nag-alangan wanted us to be reminded of. That sometimes, no matter how genuine your love is, the person you’re choosing to give it to wasn’t intended to receive it, and we should just pause, think about it for hundreds of times, and stop once it hits us, the realization of this fact.

What personally struck me as a first-time listener of this song is the opening line, “Palagi na lang bang dapat maguluhan mag-isa? Hindi ba dapat ako ay sigurado na?”. This line struck a chord in my heartstrings because in moments of confusion, sometimes, we crave and seek answers from the person we are trying to build a romantic relationship with. But because they still weren’t aware of the fact that we have feelings for them, we are forced to endure it alone.

In a Facebook post created by the Pink Trash Project page, Pink shared who inspired her to write the song for:

“It was originally released in 2021. It’s for those who thought na sure na sila sa isang tao pero mayroon talagang mga instincts na magki-kick in to warn you kaya minsan kahit okay naman, nag-aalangan ka – but eventually totoo pala lahat. I did the new version to give justice to the song talaga kasi yung original, ako lang yun. This time, the greatest musicians and mixing engineer I know ang nakasama ko para mas damang dama niyo ang pag-relapse with this song, sana magustuhan niyo.”
