As timely as it all sounds, “Our Brilliant Destruction” also highlights the beauty amongst the slow decay of the world we live in, with calamities beyond man’s control worsening with every year that passes. This one’s a beautiful sounding song, which provides listeners with an image of our world today.
The arrangement and production is well done; the guitar doesn’t overpower its neighbor instruments, the rhythm is simple yet captivating, and it switches up in dynamic when needed, i.e. during the chorus or crucial moments in the song where emphasis is needed.
To be frank, the drums are phenomenal. The rolling, and there’s just something about it that ties everything together just by how catchy it is. In terms of vocals, it matches the message well, there’s a certain husk that screams empowerment. Songwriting-wise, The Sea At Midnight chose to keep it simple yet striking: “Revolving / Burn so brightly / Against the night sky / The embers are raining”, and with “The heat is astounding” being a nod to climate change.
As said before, the meaning is mainly about the devastating fact that the world is slowly getting demolished by mankind, but the song also chose to mention how beautiful the world we live in is, or how beautiful it once was, but has now been tarnished by the ones residing within it. It is also worth mentioning that The Sea At Midnight plans to donate all proceeds from their Bandcamp page to aid those affected by the fires in Los Angeles.
As someone based in Los Angeles, they’re deeply aware of the devastating effects of wildfires. To that end, all proceeds from this song will be donated to support LA fire victims.
