Melanie A. Davis Drops New Album ‘Noctalgia’

I listened to this album three times. It reminds me of Grove Rune, who is one of my favorite artists, mainly because of the awesome style of the lead singer.

What’s great about this vocal style is that it’s completely unhinged. I love it. Honestly, as a dude, it provides some different perspectives. It’s like seeing the world through a completely different lens. Which is part of the charm of this album. I love the imagery of nature and especially of the stars. It’s trippy, but it’s also not psychedelic. It’s got a really authentic vibe coming from someone who is very in touch with reality, but I think literally just sees the magic of the world the rest of us are just allowing to slowly disappear.

And what I really, really like about this, is that it’s not a lament. This music really makes me feel like I’m experiencing the world in a different way. It captures the magic and naturalism of a kind of mythicism, which is oddly hard to find in the modern world.

It’s bewitching. And it’s brave. Poetry like this is hard enough to write, because of the amount of introspection and vulnerability needed to interpret emotion and experience in such an eccentric way, but to also to perform it is nearly impossible. It’s very rare.

All that is really just an introduction to comment on the effects the vocal performance and lyrics had on me as I listened to this album. It really is great. Like I said, it reminds me of Grove Rune, who is one of my favorite artists. It’s odd and playful, but also brave and intelligent.

But the music is also wonderful, and pretty much for the same reasons. This is definitely an eclectic sound, but it’s very charming, and frankly, has a uniqueness to it that pretty much makes it its own genre. It’s got elements of folk, jazz, country, you name it. But it’s very indie. It draws from a lot of different influences and styles, but is blended in a way that 100% backs the vocalist, and with that, creates a complete sound that I think is authentic, unique, and sincere.

It’s really good. It’s also produced really well. You can tell the sound engineers did a great job recording the instruments, especially the guitars, and the vocal production is also top tier. Stuff like this shouldn’t go under appreciated when an independent artist has put together a work like this. Not only is it noteworthy because of its quality, which is, as a music fan, is great to find in independent production, but also because it’s commendable to everyone who contributed to the project.

I love the atmosphere and the quality of the recordings make this really great listening. I’m a big fan of dream pop and shoegaze, and I would say this has a similar vibe, but a very different way of producing it.

The music is much more complex, and the lyrics are more mature. In some ways, it reminds me of Pavement. It sounds great, and the song structures are non-conventional and the meter of the poetry is as well, which makes each track super fresh and interesting to listen to.

It’s tough to do that without sounding a little unhinged. But honestly, we all are, and the music scene is full of a lot of boring music because people don’t generally have the courage to present their worldview, opinions, and concerns with sincerity and without holding anything back.

I listened to this three times for a reason. I think this album is great if you like poetry and  listening to interesting music. Which we all should. Definitely go listen to this album. Hopefully you’ll have the same great experience I had.
