Ms. Lauryn Hill’s Sole Record Tops Apple Music 100 Best Albums

After the much-awaited anticipation towards all the music lovers and connoisseurs out there, Apple Music reveals “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” by the Goddess of Hip-Hop herself as the rightful heiress to the throne for the best album, according to their newly-released all-time list.

Breathed into life two decades and a half ago, Hill absolutely knows the perfect formula on how to create an album which holds such immense significance both for the music and for the people, and if you ever heard the record, you might have listened to these building blocks: number one, her voice; number two, vox populi; and number three, vox dei.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, 1998

However, the music does not stop there. It became life, and led through each and every person who were lucky enough to have inculcated this album which, understatedly, helped them achieve a higher realm of self-identity, spirituality, and social justice—some of major themes of the record infused with her lyrical prowess and introspection using RnB, hip-hop, and gospel undertones.

Rare is an occurrence for someone who attains with such notoriety based on just the artist’s debut alone, and not to mention, the only record she ever put out solo in her entire discography. That being said, Hill swept other well-respected and renowned artists, musicians, and bands such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and The Rolling Stones, even the contemporary zeitgeist ones such as Taylor Swift, Adele, and Beyonce, who also top-notched other greatest albums of all time lists from other curated music ranking websites.

Oftentimes, music is subjective, and it always has been, but somehow never in the eyes of the musicologists and critics. Recently, upon its release, it is Apple Music’s turn to face the general consensus’ suspicious glares and raised eyebrows after putting a hierarchy on millions of records that could possibly have a shot to be part of the definitive albums in the history of men, which, in their language, “…a modern love letter to the records that have shaped the world we live and listen in today.”

No matter how questionable the society think these lists are, it merely proves the subjectivism of art—thus, to each their own.
