Here at APPPPC, we are dedicated to making you discover more artists, in and out of the Philippines. That’s why we are shining a spotlight on one of our new favorite local acts, sundayspecial!
Who is sundayspecial you might ask? Well, they are a four-piece uprising Alternative/Synth-Pop band hailing from Southern Manila. Founded in 2021, they are known for expressing their passion through powerful, melodic, and lyrically honest music. They label their music as “Tito Pop”, the kind which caters nostalgic vibes for younger generations to enjoy. Their music and hard work make up an act, and that’s one of the very reasons why sundayspecial indeed deserves a decent listen. Some of their song titles include their debut song Magkabilang Mundo, Di Bale Na Lang, and Sana Ay ‘Di Mo Ako.
Their band origin started in late 2019. They told appppc that their musical journey was set in motion when both members from another band began to work on a side project. This side project was likely an outlet for their creativity and musical expression outside of their main band before. COVID-19 stopped the world and in its gears in 2020, but sundayspecial didn’t let it stop theirs. In this period, they kept creating and making music, persevered, and continued to work on this project. By January 2021, they already expanded and recruited their former bandmates to play alongside one another again for this project. This is the birth of sundayspecial. This move brought them new perspectives, talents, and experiences to their musical venture. Their mutual passion for music is what inspired them to form a band and stay together. Their members are composed of Marvs, the punctual and very understanding kuya of the band, Momo, the silent, huggable, and adoptable newcomer of the band, Sherwin, the band’s teddy bear who’s funny, reliable, and understanding, and lastly, Dedek, the one who acts as the team captain and thinks about the band’s welfare. He leads by example and very talented as well.
The sundayspecial way of creating and producing music is this: Their member, Dedek, is the one who mostly creates the demo tracks for the band. He made his bandmates listen to it, get their approval, and eventually sends the draft to the members for them to give criticism to and discuss overall arrangements. Finally, they will record the final track which will then be distributed to different music streaming platforms for us to listen to! It might sound easy but it for sure is also a tedious process as well. A lot of love and sacrifice might be two of their included secret ingredients, too.
Because we already asked them about the process, we also asked what or who their inspirations from the songs they wrote. sundayspecial then proceeded to tell us that they mostly take inspiration from other people’s experiences and feelings, but at the same time, they also inject some of their influences: the bands they listen to. This gives an authentic and genuine spin is sundayspecial’s storytelling in their songs’ lyrics.
As a rising band whose name started to give a buzz around the Metro, sundayspecial recounted some of the memorable moments in their career. One of those memories is when they were able to play on the prestigious Rakrakan Festival stage last 2023. Many acts consider this event a big opportunity for them to be known because of the event’s legacy and also because of the large number of attendees. Another memorable moment that they remember vividly was when they did their music video for their song Di Bale Na Lang. This memory is special because they were able to work alongside their close friends and barkada. Having to share moments like this with your loved ones truly is a memory worth remembering. Lastly, the band said that being recognized by people around the Metro gave them lots of wonderful and fulfilling memories that they will hold on to for sure, for the rest of their lives.
When asked about their musical endeavors, plans, and goals for the future, sundayspecial said that they wanted to successfully translate their personalities into their music that would also relate to their listeners not just here in the country but cross boarding outside the country as well. They said that they also enjoy conveying specific atmospheres, stories, and experiences that they encounter into musical form that could reflect the stories and lives of their listeners and that the goal is to provide them with Quality Pinoy Music all over the world. Sundayspecial also shared that they are open to collaborate with anyone just as long as they too, are willing to collaborate with them.
As someone who always asks for spoilers, we also try to take a peek at what sundayspecial has been cooking behind the scenes, but they told me that it was a secret and that they plan on surprising us, their listeners. Speaking of which, sundayspecial would like to thank everyone for the continuous support and trust that their listeners are giving them. “We will continue to improve our craft and keep on creating music for you all to enjoy. Huwag sana kayong magsawang sumuporta sa amin! Stay cute!”
