Copenhagen‘s own HunBjørn, the talented artist, singer, and producer, has just dropped a new EP, “In the Eye,” on May 24. This five-track collection is an electro-pop masterpiece that intricately explores themes of empowerment and the multifaceted realities of life, particularly in the complexities of relationships and the emotions they entail.
Setting the Scene. The EP opens with the title track “In the Eye.” From the first note, it wraps you in a relaxing electronic pop sound, perfectly showcasing HunBjørn’s enchanting voice. Imagine swaying slowly with your eyes closed, lost in the rhythm, as the gentle melodies and soothing beats transport you to a place of calm and tranquility. This song is not just easy to remember but also makes you feel calm and interested. It makes you feel like you’re inside the music, making it the best first song for the EP.
Following up is “Words Don’t Disappear.” This song takes you to a different place with its dreamy and ethereal sounds. HunBjørn’s vocals here are hauntingly beautiful, creating a strong emotional foundation. This song captures the essence of human experiences, portraying the complexities of relationships and the tumultuous nature of our inner worlds. It is proof of HunBjørn’s ability to express raw emotions in a way that feels authentic and relatable, making it a standout track on the EP.
The third track, “When You Wing It,” shifts the mood with a more upbeat sound. It’s infused with vibrant electronic elements and features rap verses that are truly on fire. HunBjørn showcases her versatility, proving she can seamlessly blend singing and rapping. This track is a refreshing burst of energy, standing out with its dynamic beat and catchy hooks. “Out of My Control” introduces a mysterious, almost post-punk sound. The song explores themes of surrendering to another person and daring to let go, showing vulnerability. It’s like a long, orgasmic movement that builds up gradually, pulling you into its deep emotional core. The haunting melodies and evocative lyrics make this an amazing track.
Closing the EP is “It Burns,” a song about the courage to let go of a toxic relationship. It has a nostalgic sound with a slow beat and ambient textures, perfect for a late-night playlist. The gentle, soothing vibe makes it a fitting end to the EP, leaving you in a reflective state.
Behind the Creation
HunBjørn’s creative process for this EP took a different route than usual. Typically starting at the piano, she instead began these new songs in her DAW (digital audio workstation), blending production and writing simultaneously. This technical approach led her to new sonic territories, merging her tonal and rhythmic language in fresh ways.
“Reflecting on the digital versus organic worlds, HunBjørn explains, “Since corona, I’ve thought a lot about sitting at a machine and writing about the body, but also the whole digital staged reality compared to the organic real world. In my new songs, it has become a play with a space where the two worlds interact. The technical, the manipulated, processed, produced. Tuned vocals, sample beats, etc., as opposed to the organic in vocals, cello, and analogue synths.”
A Soundtrack for Empowerment
With “In the Eye,” HunBjørn has crafted a catchy pop soundtrack that embodies feminist cohesion in a constantly changing reality. Each track offers a unique blend of sounds and emotions, creating a deeply engaging listening experience. Whether you’re slow dancing to the title track or reflecting on life with “It Burns,” this EP is a testament to HunBjørn’s artistry and innovation in the electro-pop genre.
If you’re looking for music that combines stunning production with heartfelt themes, “In the Eye” by HunBjørn is definitely worth a listen.
