Free Your Mind With Jenny Colquitt’s New Album “staring at the Moon”

As humans, we are just small bits and pieces in this universe. Although this is true, we always seem to feel like problems that are bigger than the world is forthcoming upon us. As fragile little souls, all that’s left for us to do is to brace for whatever’s in store for us in our future. And with that, the only thing that we can do is let our mind wander about what the future is going to be and stare at the moon along with the dancing stars around it. As we suck and breathe in the cold evening breeze, the truth of the reality will come dawning upon us again.

That was the trope that Staring at the Moon ― a ten-track album by Jenny Colquitt― is giving. Released last May 3rd, 2024, the album has already gained thousands of streams on Spotify. With its relaxing yet intense melody, mixed with its relatable lyrics, it is guaranteed that many of these people who listened to the album share a mutual feeling of being seen. This album offers comfort about the fact that even though we have different life statuses in this earth, we mutually share that feeling of vulnerability as humans.

Staring at the Moon is Colquitt’s second studio album. The album incorporates a dynamic range of styles and instrumentations. Colquitt’s musical influences of folk, rock, and pop were also evident in the album’s tracks. These tracks from the album are also part of Colquitt’s 12-date UK Tour which runs from May 9th until 9th of June 2024.

The album opens up with the emotional Bravest of the Brave. This first song is an ode to every one of us. Because no matter how silent you are about a certain matter, I’m sure you quite struggled with a problem you faced before. Congratulations! You made it and overcame that problem. I am so proud of you, as much as Jenny, which is why this song was dedicated to you.
There are also some songs from the album that can be dedicated to oneself, or to someone who has helped you a lot from your struggles such as the 2nd, 4th, and 7th which are No One Loves Me Like You, Without You, and Dear Me respectively. The rawness of the songs’ message, sharing the same themes of being thankful to have people by the persona’s side when everything went heavy, and being thankful for them for holding on with the persona.

Colquitt’s mastery and passion for her craft can also be seen in the album that she composed. Her story telling prowess is also topnotch, evident in the rest of her song such as I’m Fading, I Won’t Let You Drive, For A Moment, Fallin Angels, and My Design. These songs are different from each other, yet familiar with one another and was cohesively beautiful together.

The album then concludes with its emotional last song entitled Staring at the Moon. The song tackles the ugliness of the world, the worst of its possibilities, yet choosing to find beauty and calmness while staring at the moon with someone you love and value. This song is giving, “If the world crash and burn, I’ll still choose to stare at the night sky with you.” A very post-apocalyptic approach you might even say.

Reflecting on the album, Colquitt says, “The album follows the themes of love, loss and our ingrained human vulnerability. It explores the dichotomy we are posed with, being small humans on a planet floating in the mystery which is space. The moon and the stars are our constant reminder that the things we face daily are only small in relation to this beautiful universe, yet the power of our love is stronger and larger than anything we can see with our eyes above us. ‘Staring at the Moon’ is my way of capturing this theme through music’.
