It always felt amazing to listen to new artists with great potential—you’ll feel their authentic emotions, their strong drive, and their fiery passion through each line and note that they produced. This is true of this Toronto-based artist known as NYRE, a singer-songwriter who has recently released her four-track EP collection entitled Avoidant on January 17th, 2025. I honestly felt giddy listening to all these tracks as they carry so much of the artist’s character—it is unique, it is stylish, and it sure sounded all good!
Avoidant opens with a critically acclaimed track, “It Should Be You,” which right off the bat features a crisp and super-polished production that highlights NYRE’s extraordinary voice. It garnered a spot on Spotify’s prestigious editorial playlist “Fresh Finds Canada. There’s no denying that this is a beautiful performance, and because of that, the track fully hooks your attention right from its opening notes with its great blend of indie and pop that is both refreshing and satisfying to your ears. I personally love how every word on this track felt intentional, which goes well with all the highs and lows of the song, which only meant the whole track was meticulously done and every detail was thoughtfully placed—a showcase of impressive attention and craftsmanship from NYRE.
Now comes another hit track from NYRE, “Joke’s On Me.” This focus track has a delicate sound presented by all the piano notes in this piece sets a solemn vibe that explores familiar themes to the majority of the audience in terms of relationships. Oftentimes, we find ourselves thinking of all the things that we have personally done, or maybe our expectations on our relationships–basically the “I”s that we have in our relationship—every effort that we put in, every action that we made, every piece of ourselves that we’ve given to make things work—all of it was carefully laid out by NYRE’s amazing performance.
This 4-track collection is an emotional rollercoaster, as each track brings a unique, exquisite vibe to the whole project, which proves the command of this artist to different genres. Here, you get to feel lovely and upbeat in one moment, then, as the playlist shuffles, it takes a more emotional tone, and the next moment you find yourself plunged into a darker corner of NYRE’s musicality. Now, enter the track “You Didn’t Mean It” and “Main Character,” a proper closing statement for the collection. These tracks present a different kind of NYRE to the listeners—it’s sharper and more sensuous; she sings with an electrifying intensity that makes each line delivery feel like a venomous bite. These tracks are in such a mood! You just gotta love the depth, the tension, and the whole vibe of these songs!
This is a great debut EP for NYRE, as this is nothing short of impressive—dang, it’s almost more than that! Avoidant is a powerful introduction to NYRE’s musicality and craftsmanship as an artist, as it showcased her ability to channel her emotions through great-sounding music and lyrics! I’m confident enough to say that with this outstanding release, and for sure we’ll be hearing more from NYRE because this?? Avoidant EP? It’s one helluva release! So, don’t miss out!
