The Pulltops start the holiday season with a cover of On Christmas Day (I Saw Three Ships)

I think we can all agree on the fact that Christmas time is officially in the air because of music. Oftentimes, the best way we know that it’s officially the season of the holidays is when an ever-vibrant Mariah Carey hatches out of cryostasis and sings “IT’S TIME” with the highest notes possible. Sometimes, it’s just when radio stations play the holiday staples in rotation. This year, I’d say my official mark of the holiday seasons come from artists coming out of the fold to celebrate Christmas in one way or another.

The Milwaukee-based duo of The Pulltops, often known for delivering a hook-ridden mix of indie rock, power pop, and pop-punk-rock tunes, show up in the first week to deliver a cover of On Christmas Day (I Saw Three Ships), originally by The Chieftains.

I wasn’t all too familiar with the original tune, so consider me pleasantly surprised to hear a high-energy and overall charming twist to the 1991 Christmas Carol featuring a blend of punchy guitars, simple and effective rhythms all topped with spirited vocal arrangements of the duo filled with holiday cheer that sell the track with gusto, down to the incorporations of xylophones and Blink-182-style vocal ahh-ahh-ahhh.

It’s a wonderfully charming tune that I would gladly recommend to rock fans looking into getting into the holiday spirit, lest they be a grinch. This rendition will put a smile on your face and it’s a great way to start your December.
