Opehlia’s Eye’s New Album ‘Catharsis’

I’ve seen this scene first hand. It’s a lot more prevalent than I think a lot of people realize. Heavy sounds like this can be really hard to identify with at first, or it would seem, for a lot of people, me included.

But like I said, I’ve seen these heavy rock shows, up-close and personal. And even though I’ve never been able to quite fit in with the crowd, there’s a sincerity of expression and art to the performance that I’ve really come to respect. It’s loud, in your face, and it doesn’t hold anything back. It’s the kind of music that draws attention to itself for a reason.

But due to this mold, a lot of heavier bands fall into a trap of relying on shock value for entertainment. They put less work into the sound, which causes the music to lose impact since there isn’t a crafted message people can identify with. It’s all for show.

Catharsis sets itself apart because it goes beyond an aggressive outlet for frustration. The band’s also created a sound that people can rally behind as they seek purpose after they’ve gone through the pains of maturing. It’s the magnanimity of a higher order granting clemency, but also asking you for something in return. It’s inspirational.

This is the kind of album that really makes you look internally and at the world. It’s not soma. It’s loud and emphatic because it’s trying to get your attention, and I think Opehlia’s Eye has presented a great collection of songs that are not only gripping, but also hit the mark they targeted.

It says, yes, we’re alive, but what are we going to do about it? Accept and live passively? Despite the evil and pain in the world? Or were we meant to do more with our lives.

And what’s more awesome is that it’s mostly presented through the music. The lyrics resonate with this message as well, but for the most part, it’s a soundtrack for growing stronger and overcoming rivalry and injustice.

If you’re a heavy music fan, you should check out this album. I think Ophelia’s Eye has created an inspired call to action through their sound that should easily resonate with fans of the genre, and might even convince a decent number to join the fight.
