Scott Waldman is the lead singer for Lido Beach, an LA based band that originated in New York. In this song, I Never Pulled Your Trigger, he showcases his unique vocal approach and storytelling prowess, supported by two well strummed acoustic guitars.
The charm of this song isn’t necessarily in the quality of the singing, which is not to be knocked. Scott has a great timbre and style with his vocal delivery that sets him apart from many performing musical artists. But what really interested me with this song is the melodies.
This is an excellent example of a songwriter that has control of meter. The verses are well measured, and Scott hits his targets. The hook is catchy, which really allows Scott to lean into his emotions during the bridge.
This is noteworthy because music is as much about familiarity and repetition as it is about variety and novelty. What this song does so well is introduce ideas before building on them, which helps the audience identify with the message of the song.
This masterful understanding really allows Scott’s emotional delivery in the latter half of the song to stand out. And all this is done with a consistent story told throughout the song.
