IS THIS WHAT I SEE? A great synthpop EP?

You know that funny feeling when you’re staring out the window of a moving car at night, city lights blurring past, contemplating every decision you’ve ever made while the perfect soundtrack plays in your head? It’s here on IS THIS WHAT I SEE?, the new synthpop EP from independent artist Myah, who has apparently decided that music should hurt, but, like, in a cool, nostalgic way.

For those unfamiliar, Myah is best known for her viral TikTok storytelling series, which racked up millions of views, but IS THIS WHAT I SEE? is here to remind us that she is, in fact, an artist first—and a damn compelling one at that. This EP is drenched in nostalgia, synthpop shimmer, and the crushing realization that time moves too fast and we can never go back.

But that’s not what this is about. This is about music. And what Myah has done here is create something that isn’t just an EP—it’s a self-contained cinematic universe of yearning. IS THIS WHAT I SEE? is drenched in 2010s synthpop aesthetics, pulling from the widescreen, emotional maximalism of peak Purity Ring with dashes of bedroom pop flutters, alongside the quirky hooks of synthpop-mode MGMT and a dash of Drive soundtrack melancholy for extra heartbreak. Each of the eight tracks here play out like a movie scene in real-time; full of wistful melodies and fluttery vocals, capturing that perfect balance of euphoria and existential dread.

IS THIS WHAT I SEE? reflects on nostalgia and the fleeting nature of time, a recurring struggle Myah expresses throughout the project. Whether reminiscing on love or contemplating existence, Myah delivers a heartfelt and immersive sonic journey. Each track on this 8-track EP plays like a movie scene, rich with emotion and atmosphere, inviting listeners into a world where time moves a little slower, if only for a moment.

The first track, with you, already captures this lovelorn pop mood very easily with its sickly-sweet vocal runs and the cinematic i’ll be your light does not let up at all with its heartfelt melodrama tugging at your emotions as it evokes neon city lights and late-night adventures, and is effortlessly infectious for it. The track flames is a soft, nostalgic synth progression that glows beneath whispery vocals. My personal favourite of the project, running, is the soundtrack for the mood to dissociate while staring dramatically out of a car window with its pulsating arpeggios, hypnotic rhythms, vocal charms, and the kind of production that makes you feel like you’re ascending into the cosmos.

And the best part? This is just the beginning. Myah’s debut album, i don’t know what i’m feeling, drops in June 2025, and if IS THIS WHAT I SEE? is anything to go by, it’s going to ruin us in the best way possible. This EP alone shows Myah’s potential for something emotionally devastating, and I am here for it.
